ルイス・キャロルのたくらみ

ルイス・キャロルの『スナーク狩り』の原文を載せているLiterary.org-Tha Online Literature Libraryというウェブ・サイトをみつけた。
��と思ったら元のテキストはProject Gutenbergのものと断り書きがあった。時間に余裕があれば、Project Gutenbergにどんな作家、作品が収録されているか、ゆっくり巡回してみたいものだ）

　といっても『スナーク狩り』については、いい翻訳（原典対照 ルイス・キャロル詩集―不思議の国の言葉たち (ちくま文庫)
があるので、またぞろ自分で翻訳してみようなどという気にはさらさらならない。
以下は最終の４連。

"It's a Snark!" was the sound that first came to their ears,
And seemed almost too good to be true.
Then followed a torrent of laughter and cheers:
Then the ominous words "It's a Boo-"

Then, silence. Some fancied they heard in the air
A weary and wandering sigh
Then sounded like "-jum!" but the others declare
It was only a breeze that went by.

They hunted till darkness came on, but they found
Not a button, or feather, or mark,
By which they could tell that they stood on the ground
Where the Baker had met with the Snark.

In the midst of the word he was trying to say,
In the midst of his laughter and glee,
He had softly and suddenly vanished away---
For the Snark *was* a Boojum, you see.

　以前も書いたが、ほんとうに声に出して読みやすい。

　それにしても、これも以前書いたことだが、登場人物の名前のイニシャルがすべてBというのもルイス・キャロルの意識的なたくらみだろうが、どこかにそのことについて言及した論文などないものだろうか？
